Higher Education Certificate (HEC)

You can still pursue the Course of your dreams by acquiring a University Degree through our NCHE certified Higher Education Certificate (HEC).

The Cavendish University Uganda Higher Education Certificate in Humanities and Physical Sciences programme provides learners with the basic introductory knowledge, cognitive and conceptual tools and practical techniques for further higher education studies in their chosen field of study.

Attainment of this programme signifies that the learner has attained a basic level of higher education knowledge and competence in a particular field and is capable of applying such knowledge and competence to further their studies. Generally, holders of the Higher Education Certificate, are expected to be better prepared for further studies.

The Higher Education Certificate is an intensive programme intended for students who have successfully completed the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent but who may not have attained sufficient grades to enrol for Diplomas or Degree programmes.

The programme is also intended for students from countries whose secondary school qualifications are not considered equivalent to UACE but permit admission into Higher Education in those countries.

The programme is carefully designed to provide study and learning support skills needed for academic life and academic knowledge needed for further higher education. The knowledge shall emphasize general principles and application.

Short Courses

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The Cavendish University Uganda English as a Second Language Course is a short course designed to help students who would want to learn how to communicate in English, improve their Business languages skills, and develop proficiency in the English Language. It is a three level course with each level developed to meet your specific need for the English Language.

Course Information

Course duration 12 Weeks. Approximately four (4) hours of study required each week.
Start Date February 13th, 2023. Enrolment is open all year round.
Study Mode The course will be run on Day and Weekend Programmes on face to face (contact) and online modes. Study on campus or from anywhere in the world with an internet connection and still get support from our seasoned and passionate Facilitators.
Certificates A Certificate of Completion will be issued to participants who complete all the course activities including the weekly quizzes, activities and progress assessments in weeks 4, 8 and 12.
Prerequisites Absolutely no entry requirements or qualification criteria
Timelines Study at your own pace and in your own time and complete within three months of your start date. There will be scheduled classes on campus for those who prefer to study in person.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this course, successful students should be able to:

  • Develop personal presence and greater self-trust confidence in key language items useful in different everyday situations
  • Develop skills to communicate in English to any English-speaking audience
  • Identify with the language associated with everyday situations
  • Have a firm grip of Basic English language use
  • Read texts with fluency, understanding and competence, decoding groups of words/phrases and not just single words
  • Develop a strong writing skill where thinking precedes writing
  • Use of the MLA, APA, Chicago or Harvard citation reference or bibliography format

General Learning Outcomes for Employability

The General objective of the CUU’s Basic English for Beginners is to Identify with the language used in everyday situations and practice how it used in everyday context. The short course will provide information on the pronunciation of grammar items; presentations of common errors and how to avoid making them; and include a variety of exercise – from drills to contextualised and personalised practice.

  1. Communication skills:  Write summaries of concepts learned in the course as part of the effort to develop strong writing skills.
  2. Teamwork: Demonstrate teamwork through active collaborative learning including group projects and presentations.
  3. Digital literacy: Design and make PowerPoint presentations of concepts learned to enhance their digital literacy and public speaking skills.
  4. Learning how to learn: Demonstrate use of online resources in learning as part of the process of learning how to learn and becoming lifelong learners.
  5. Analytical skills and ability to apply new knowledge: Demonstrate analytical skills and application of new concepts.
  6. Problem solving: Work individually and in groups to practice problem solving.
  7. Critical Thinking: Apply critical thinking skills by asking questions and demanding evidence (5Ws and 1H: what, when, where, who, why, how) in order to become better thinkers.

Programme Structure

Short Course Description
ESD101: ESL Beginners A1 The Beginners course is designed for students that have no experience at all in using the English language. It will delve into low English vocabulary and basic grammar covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills on topics of personal interests, career, and life experiences. Students will learn English language skills through diverse instructional methodologies that will strengthen reading, writing, listening speaking and critical thinking skills. This short course will help you learn Basic English skills that will give you the confidence to interact and listen in English. It is suitable for beginners, those who lack the very basics of the English language and those who wish to move their English language to another level. After completing this course successfully, you can continue with the second level, ESD102: ESL Elementary A2 – English Grammar and Vocabulary. At the end of the course, you will have built your English skills and developed your ability to speak and interact with any English-speaking audience.
ESD102: ESL Elementary A2 The second level will introduce you to the English Grammar and Vocabulary. The course will provide an enabling environment to communicate, and generally boost competence in usage. Students will practice English through conversation, speaking listening, reading, and writing activities It will give you knowledge about the correct usage of the language, and emphasise reading skills in order to be able to study effectively and to think logically. During this course, students will work on the most important grammar rules and expand their vocabulary. It is suitable for anyone who wants to polish their grammar and expand their vocabulary. It will cover the most important grammatical rules and most common mistakes. It will refresh your knowledge, and introduce you to rules that will govern English language at different levels. After successfully completing this level, you will qualify to take ESD103: ESL Intermediate B1 – Writing for Academic Purposes. At the end of the course you will feel more confident to speak and communicate in English.
ESD103: ESL Intermediate B1   This is a short course that gives the students the skills needed to transition into university level education and courses that necessitate academic writing skills. It will introduce and teach students about working as a team, projects, and presentations to ensure academic and career success, civic participation, and strategies for lifelong learning. The course will allow students to practice writing skills at sentence, paragraph, and extended essay levels with correct grammatical structures. Students will learn skills in listening and speaking so as to be able to communicate effectively, and equip students with enough skills to further their studies at advanced level and to understand the cultures, traditions and general knowledge of native English speakers. This course is intended for students who are planning to join University education or are at the University, but in the bridging course or are in first year first semester. At the end of the course, the student will be able to write an essay with citation, do presentations, raise strong arguments and defend them with evidence, facts etc. you will also learn how to cite and reference your work using the correct standards of APA, MLA, Harvard, Vancouver etc. styles.

Admission Requirements

Diploma Programme Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for admission to an ordinary diploma programme are:

  • A candidate must have obtained:
    a) At least five (5) passes at the Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent at the same sitting;
    b)At least one (1) principal pass and two (2) subsidiary passes obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.
  • A candidate must have obtained a Second Class Certificate at the Foundation Programme.

Bachelor’s Degree Programme Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for admission to a Bachelor`s degree programme are:

  • Direct entry (a) At least five (5) passes at the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent (b) At least two (2) principal passes at the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.

Conditional admission will be verified after getting the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) Results print – out. Within the framework of the general direct entry requirements, there may be Special Faculty Requirements which a candidate must fulfill to gain admission to a programme in a specific Faculty.

  • Mature Age Entry (a) A candidate must be at least 25 years of age (b) The candidate must have passed Mature Age Entry Examinations with 50% mark or above (c) The Mature Age Entry Examinations must have been taken at a Centre approved by the NCHE (d)No candidate who had previously attended a programme at Cavendish University Uganda shall be readmitted to the University under this scheme to a programme of study in which he/she failed to qualify during his/her previous attendance.
  • A Diploma Holder`s Avenue A candidate must have obtained at least a second class/credit diploma or the equivalent performance which is relevant to his/her desired field of study from a recognized institution.
  • Foundation Programme Certificate A candidate who holds a Foundation Programme Certificate from a recognized institution is eligible for admission.
  • A Degree Holder`s Avenue a) A candidate must have a degree in an accredited programme from a recognized institution. b)The candidate shall be considered for admission to a field relevant/related to his/her degree. c) The candidate must have met the minimum requirements for admission to the degree programme he/she has completed.
  • An International Applicant:

6.1 Must have a qualification that is recognized for University entry in his/her home country or country where he/she has studied. The applicant will be offered a provisional admission for one semester pending equating of his/her qualification.

The University may consider for admission to a degree programme a candidate who has successfully completed a 12 – year – system of education provided that such a candidate has been registered at another University, prior to applying to Cavendish University Uganda, for a degree programme and has successfully completed at least one year of University education. Such a candidate must, however, submit the University academic transcript from that other University.

6.2 A holder of a 12- year-system of education Certificate:

A holder of this Certificate such as the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or the equivalent is required to successfully complete a Foundation Year before enrolling for the Bachelor`s degree programme.

  • Special Entry: Applications submitted by candidates who do not meet the traditional entry criteria can only be considered after consultations with the NCHE for guidance and with the approval of the Senate.
  • Admission to Other than the First Year Admission to the second or third or any other year requires the special consideration and permission of the relevant Faculty Board and the Senate in accordance with the University policies on Exemption and Credit Accumulation and Transfer.

Ordinary Diploma Programme Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for admission to an ordinary diploma programme are:

  • A candidate must have obtained: a) At least five (5) passes at the Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent at the same sitting; b)At least one (1) principal pass and two (2) subsidiary passes obtained at the same sitting or its equivalent.
  • A candidate must have obtained a Second Class Certificate at the Foundation Programme.

Ordinary Certificate Programme Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for admission to an ordinary certificate programme is a Uganda Certificate of Education with at least five (3) passes obtained at the same sitting.

Master’s Degree Programme Requirements

An applicant for a Master`s degree normally has obtained at least a second class lower division degree or its equivalent from a recognized university. An applicant with a third class (pass) degree must satisfy the relevant department and the Board of Postgraduate Studies that he/she has acquired academic and professional growth as determined by the Board of the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research.

English Proficiency Programme Requirements

Candidates from countries where the language of instruction is not English are required to provide evidence of proficiency in English.

International applicants currently resident in the country are advised to take English Proficiency Tests at approved centers such as the Institute of Languages at Makerere University, the British Council, etc.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Scores are accepted as evidence of english proficiency.

Higher Education Certificate Programme Requirements

The general requirements are;

  • Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with at least two subsidiary passes or its equivalent. At least one of the subsidiary pass shall be from a principal subject. For avoidance of doubt, a holder of UACE with only one principal pass shall be deemed to meet the admission requirements.
  • Vocational Qualifications at level 2 or 3 of the Uganda Vocational Qualifications Framework or its equivalent.
  • Qualifications equivalent to Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as shall be determined by the National Council in consultation with the Uganda National Examinations Board.
  • An ordinary certificate from an institution recognized by NCHE.
  • Students whose foreign secondary school qualifications are not considered equivalent to UACE but permit admission into Higher Education in the foreign country. Such students shall have passed at least five subjects with a minimum overall grade of C (equivalently a Ugandan grade 5). In addition, foreign students whose studies were not conducted in English shall show proof of proficiency in the English Language. The English proficiency centers shall be accredited by NCHE.
