Gilani’s Supermarket Salaries—why are the salaries so low!

I got a message on Facebook from our readers wanting to know the salaries paid to Gilani’s Supermarket staff. Here is how the message read:

“Hey, I graduated with a Diploma in Marketing last year. I applied for a job at Gilani’s Supermarket and they called me for an interview. I have no idea how much money they pay supermarket cashiers. Please ask for me and get back. The information will be useful for me”.

Answer

I went in person to Gilani’s and secretly asked some of the cashiers in the supermarket. One of them told me he earns Ksh 23,000. Another one revealed that he has worked for the supermarket for 5 years and his current salary is Ksh 36,000. They told me that the starting salary for a cashier is Ksh 20,000 to Ksh 27,000.

2. Supermarket attendant—Ksh 18,000 to Ksh 25,000
3. Security Officers—Ksh 12,000 to Ksh 18,000

5. Supermarket Manager—Ksh 70,000 to Ksh 100,000
6. Cleaners—Ksh 12,000 to Ksh 18,000
7. Accountant—Ksh 40,000 to Ksh 70,000
