Universities that accept second class lower for masters admission in Kenya

Nearly all universities in Kenya accept Second Class Lower Division grade for admission to Masters courses but on condition that one has at least 2 years of practical experience. If you don’t have that experience, then you must possess a professional course or Postgraduate course.

Here is a list of top universities in Kenya accepting graduates with second class lower division to pursue masters:

—-Egerton University

Entry Requirements for Masters Programmes

Application forms may be obtained from the Director, Board of Postgraduate studies upon payment of a prescribed Non-refundable fee and returned duly
completed.

All applicants for registration shall be processed in the first instance through the relevant Department in which registration is sought. The Department shall then
forward all such applications with appropriate comments to the Faculty board concerned for approval Egerton University Statutes 2008 51 and onward transmission to the Board of Postgraduate studies.
Applicants shall be admitted to only one Degree programme at a time.
Admission shall be confirmed by letter from the Direct, Board of Postgraduate Studies
Admission shall be offered to holders of a Bachelor’s Degree with an Upper Second Class Honours or above or equivalent qualification from recognized Institutions.
In exceptional cases, the Senate may also admit to the Master’s programme a non-holder of Upper Second Class Honours provided that such candidate can, on the basis of the research and other scholarly work done, demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Senate qualification to undertake postgraduate studies.
Subject to approval by the Senate, Departments may formulate regulations requiring applicants to have attained other academic qualifications as may be consistent with the goals of their Master’s programmes or to appear for an interview to determine their suitability for admission. In exceptional cases, holder of lower second class honor may be admitted if they have two years of relevant experience.

MASTER OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Duration of 4 semesters

QUALIFICATIONS

Holders of Bachelor degree with First Class Honours OR Second Class Honours, Upper Division in any field from the Co- operative University of Kenya or a recognized University.

Second Class Lower Division in a relevant field from the Co- operative University of Kenya or a recognized University with at least two (2) years’ experience in research, administration, management or the public sector, as evidenced by at least one published paper in a refereed journal or Technical reports and patent documents.

Bachelor’s degree with a pass in a relevant field from the Co- operative University of Kenya or a recognized University may be considered for admission if:
(a) he/she has at least five (5) years of relevant experience in research, administration, management or the public sector or:
(b) has a post-graduate diploma in a relevant field

MASTER OF CO-OPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT

Duration of 4 semesters

QUALIFICATIONS

Holders of Bachelor degree with First Class Honours OR Second Class Honours, Upper Division in any field from the Co- operative University of Kenya or a recognized University.

MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Duration of 4 semesters

Holders of Bachelor degree with First Class Honours OR Second Class Honours, Upper Division in any field from the Co- operative University of Kenya or a recognized University.

—-University of Nairobi

Masters Degree: Applicants for masters degree programmes should have a minimum of Upper Second Class Honours Degree in the relevant discipline from the University of Nairobi or Equivalent qualification from Institutions recognized by Senate. Persons with lower qualifications but with postgraduate diplomas after Bachelors’ degrees are also considered for admission.

Admission Requirements

Second Class Bachelor’s Degree (Upper Division) in related course recognized by Moi University OR
Second Class Bachelor’s in related course (Lower Division) with two years teaching experience OR
Bachelor’s Degree with a Post-Graduate Diploma in related course or an equivalent certificate in related course, all recognized by Moi University.

—-Technical University of Kenya

At least Second Class (Upper division) honors degree from a recognized university OR

Second Class (Lower Division) honours degree in the relevant disciplines with a Postgraduate certificate and 1 year of relevant work experience OR
Pass degree with a postgraduate certificate and 2 years of relevant work experience or 5 years of relevant work experience in a relevant area

—-University of Embu

Masters’ Programme
The following is the eligibility criteria for the Masters’ Degree in the University:
i.   A holder of a first-class or a second class Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University.
ii.   Candidate who has obtained a first-class or second class degree or an equivalent qualification from another institution recognized by the University of Embu (UoEm) as being of comparable academic status from an accredited institution.
iii.   In exceptional cases, the Senate may also admit to the Master’s programme, non-holders of a first degree provided such candidates can, on the basis of the research and academic work they have done, show that they are well qualified to undertake postgraduate work, bypassing qualifying examinations.

—-Africa International University

The following shall be eligible for admission into a Master’s degree program in the University:

Holders of a Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Honours [Upper Division] or higher) from Africa International University or other universities recognized by the Africa International University Senate,
Holders of a Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Honours [Lower Division]) from Africa International University who have at least two years of relevant experience,
Holders of a postgraduate diploma (credit level or higher) from Africa International University or other institutions recognized by the Africa International University Senate,
In exceptional cases, Senate, on the recommendation of any of the schools, may admit to the Masters program, applicants who do not hold a first degree, provided that such candidates, based on the research and academic work they have done, can demonstrate that they are well qualified to undertake postgraduate work.

—Mount Kenya University

Entry Requirements

Bachelor degree in relevant field from a recognized University with at least Second Class
Honours Upper Division Or Second Class Honours Lower Division and two years of relevant work experience.

—–Strathmore University

Entry Requirements
1. Holders of First Class (or GPA of 3.45 – 4) or Upper Second Class Honors (or GPA of
2.85–3.44 ) degrees in any discipline from recognised universities; or

Holders of other related qualifications from recognised universities, considered by the Academic Council as equivalent to a First Class or Upper Second Class degree in
any discipline

Holders of Lower Second Class or at least 2.5 GPA degrees plus postgraduate diploma or certificates or at least two years working experience from the day of graduation.
In addition, the applicant must have obtained the minimum university entry requirement i.e. scored at least a C+ in their KCSE (or its equivalent).

—-Kabianga University

A candidate must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements:

Be a holder of a degree at the level of bachelors with at least Second Class honours, Upper division in any discipline from University of Kabianga or any other institution recognized by the University Senate.
or
Be a holder of a degree at the level of a Bachelors’ with Second Class honours, Lower division in any discipline from University of Kabianga or any other institution recognized by the University Senate provided the candidate has two (2) years experience in a relevant field.

Credit Transfer from other institutions of higher learning Applicants who have completed equivalent Masters course units other than MBA executive at other Senate recognized universities may, with the approval of the Senate be allowed to transfer credits up to 49 percent of required course units into their programme. The normal admission process shall apply.

—Kisii University

Masters Degree: Applicants for masters degree programmes should have a minimum of Upper Second Class Honours Degree in the relevant discipline from the Kisii University or Equivalent qualification from Institutions recognized by Senate. Persons with lower qualifications but with postgraduate diplomas after Bachelors’ degrees are also considered for admission.

Postgraduate Diploma: Applicants for Postgraduate Diplomas should have a minimum of a pass degree

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in relevant course with at least second class honors upper division
Bachelor ‘s degree or equivalent with at least second class honors upper division and a minimum of sixteen Chemistry units.
