KBC is owned by the government, it’s a State Corporation. All government adverts are aired on KBC, which are the primary source of income for the institution. Salaries paid to news anchors depend on their experience and position in the organization.
Salaries of Interns at KBC
Some interns are paid and others are not depending on how one negotiates with the organization. Most of the interns are fresh graduates who are paid Ksh 20,000 to Ksh 30,000 per month.
Salary of News Anchors
News anchors who are employed fresh from college earn Ksh 60,000 to Ksh 90,000 per month. Majority of the news anchors with 3-5 years’ experience are paid Ksh 150,000 to Ksh 250,000 monthly and those who have been in the job for more than 10 years earn over Ksh 300,000 monthly.
At least 3 of them earn above Ksh 500,000 monthly each.
Shiksha Arora earns Ksh 400,000 per month and she is among the highest paid news anchors at KBC. Cynthia Nyamai and Abdiaziz Hashim are also other well paid news anchors. They are experienced and highly qualified.
We also interviewed one of the news anchors who reads prime time news. He revealed to us this:
“Here at KBC,we aren’t paid like those in Citizen TV or TV 47 ,our salaries are a bit lower. In Citizen, Prime Time News presenters earn over Ksh 700,000 but KBC pays us Ksh 250,000 to Ksh 400,000. The highest paid journalist takes home Ksh 700,000 per month.
Of course I am among the highest paid news anchors and my monthly pay is between Ksh 400,000 and Ksh 650,000 .I don’t want to provide specific details”
Qualifications to secure employment as a News Anchor at KBC
You have to possess a degree or masters in Journalism, Public Relations or related field.If you possess practical experience of more than 3 years the better.
KBC can also poach journalists from other media stations, especially those who are about to retire.
