Is Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Exploration and Production marketable in Kenya

1

Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Exploration and Production is one course with a big name but it’s not marketable. Right now, there are no companies doing oil exploration in Kenya. Tullow Oil was responsible for the task but they stopped. If you pursue this course, you will find it hard to secure employment.

Jobs for these graduates can be found in the oil industry. This industry is not big. Petrol stations employ mostly pump attendants. They don’t prefer graduates.

In case you find pursuing this course, bear in mind that it will be difficult to get a job. The best thing to do is change your course. If you have money for self sponsored course, apply to pursue Bachelor of Nursing. Another thing to do is to get a first class and get a scholarship to Europe where jobs for these graduates are plenty. You can also get first class or second upper and apply for graduate trainee jobs.

The course can also be applied in the energy sector. You can be employed by Kenya Power, KenGen, Kenya Pipeline or Ministry of Energy but the jobs are few. To get such jobs, you should get connections or bribe. They are so competitive because they pay well. A company like KenGen will pay starting salary of Ksh 130,000.

It’s also not a must for you to get a relevant job. With first class, apply for graduate trainee positions in banks, insurance companies, real estate firms or any other sector. Once recruited, change your career. If an audit firm employs you, pursue ACCA and MBA to become a real auditor.

As a graduate, you may land anywhere. What I will advise is that while in university, start doing online jobs. You may find your passion online. YouTube is a good platform to create content and make money online. Become a blogger or do remote jobs.

ANOTHER direction to take is, start a profitable small business. You may also find your passion in business.
