Below is a list of universities in Uganda which offer Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery:

Admission Requirements

  • Five passes at O-Level with a credit in Biology and Chemistry, plus two principal passes at A-level in Biology and Chemistry. Applicants with the following qualifications may also apply; a Diploma in medical-related programmes such as Clinical medicine and community health, Laboratory Technology, Radiography, etc. Applicants with a Diploma in Nursing should have done A-level and obtained two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry.
  • Mature age certificate valid for no more than two years.
  • Relevant Higher Education Certificate

Kampala International University

Entry requirements

UACE (or equivalent) with two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry, and a subsidiary in Physics or Mathematics, plus UCE (or equivalent) with 5 passes; Or a Degree/Diploma in a health discipline or biological sciences

The Aga Khan University

Eligibility Criteria

Following is the eligibility​ criteria applicable ​for 2025:​​​​​​​​

All candidates to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree programme must satisfy the minimum stipulated admission requirements​:

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) holders: Minimum university admission requirement is C+. Additionally, applicants should possess an aggregate grade of B plain in the following cluster of subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics; and English or Kiswahili. OR

Advanced Level Certificate holders: A minimum of 2 principal passes in Biology, Chemistry, and a subsidiary pass in either Mathematics or Physics. OR

International Baccalaureate (IB): Grade 5 or above in the cluster subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics or Physics.​ OR 

Diploma in Medical Sciences: A minimum “O” level division II Pass or C+ (plus) mean grade and credit pass C+ in the cluster subjects (English or Kiswahili, Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry and Biology) in KCSE in addition to a three-year diploma with a minimum of a credit pass from a medical training institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.  OR

Undergraduate degree: Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in Biological/ Clinical  Sciences or related qualifications from a recognized University.

  1. Applicants who are writing their certification exams in the summer of 2025 may apply provisionally provided they meet the minimum requirements. However, an official admission letter will only be issued upon submission of final results, which must be received no later than Friday, August 8, 2025.
  2. Students who have studied outside East Africa are encouraged to apply. However, apart from those with A-Level and IB qualifications, all other applicants are required to have their academic credentials equated by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) or the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). This ensures proper assessment and recognition of their qualifications during the admission process​​

Uganda Christian University

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Duration 5 years)

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The minimum requirements for admission to any Undergraduate degree programme are:

  1. Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent with at least 5 passes
  2. Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent with at least 2 principal passes.
  3. Diploma holders must have passed with at least a credit.

The minimum requirements for admission to any Diploma programme are:

  1. Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent with at least 5 passes
  2. Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent with at least 1 principal pass and two subsidiary passes.

Additionally, for international applicants:

  1. Applicants whose first language or medium of instruction is not English, must provide evidence from a recognized English language training institution that they have sufficient command of English language.
  2. Applicants should have their documents equated by Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) of UCE and UACE documents and Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE) for Diploma and Certificate documents.

Lira University

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

Those Holding Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education Applying for Admission Under Private
Sponsorship Scheme.

Applicant must have:
i) Sat the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations (or equivalent) and obtained five relevant credits.
ii) Obtained Principal Passes in Biology and Chemistry and at least a Subsidiary Pass in Physics or Mathematics in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (U.A.C.E) or its equivalent at the same sitting.

Diploma Holders Applying for Admission Under Private Sponsorship Scheme

Applicants must have:
i. A Diploma in a relevant health discipline (Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography, Physiotherapy,  naesthesia, Clinical Medicine, Ophthalmic Clinical Medicine, Environmental Health  Science, Public Health, Public Health Dentistry, Pharmacy Technicians, Psychiatric Clinical Medicine, Orthopaedic Clinical Medicine, Nursing Midwifery and Comprehensive Nursing).
ii. At least one Principal Pass in Either Biology or Chemistry in UACE or its equivalence.
iii. A working experience of at least two (2) years in a related field
