I got this question from a lady who wants to study Bachelor of Commerce in Uganda. She wants to know whether the course is marketable.
“Hey, my name is Lucky and I am planning to study for a course in Bachelor of Commerce. Before joining, I would like to know whether I can get a job with this course”
Answer
Bachelor of Commerce is a good course to study in Uganda but it’s more marketable if you score a first class or second class upper and supplement it with a professional course. If you want to get a job with a degree only, then you should pass with a first class and ensure you pass interview for Graduate Trainee position. However, I strongly encourage you to pursue professional courses related to Bachelor of Commerce. Some of the best professional courses include:
- Certified Public Accountants
- Chartered Financial Analyst(CFA)
- Certified Fraud Examiner(CFE)
- Actuarial professional certification
- Association of Chartered Certified Accountants(ACCA)
- Certified Internal Auditor(CIA)
- Global Certifications for Internal Audit | The IIA
If you want to specialize in finance, pursue CFA or CPA. If your intention is to become an auditor, pursue CPA, ACCA or CIA. If your interest is to become an Actuary, pursue actuarial professional certification. To become an accountant, PA or ACCA will be ideal.
Bcom is applicable in all industries. There is no single company in Uganda that doesn’t need an accountant or financial professional. Banks will also employ you as a graduate trainee. Government institutions like NSSF, URA and Bank of Uganda are among the best government employers.
How to start a career with a degree in BCom in Uganda
The best way to start your career is by getting internship in a reputable organization to gain experience. Alternatively, apply for graduate trainee position in a banking institution, insurance, government institution or any other organization advertising for those vacancies.
If you fail to secure employment, apply to volunteer and work for free.
